Leg spinner Kartik Meiyappan, who represented the UAE in last year’s ICC Under-19 World Cup, has made it to the shortlisted line-up of cricketers set to go under the hammer in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction next week.
2020 was a forgettable year for most of us, except Karthik Meiyappan. The 20-year-old made his One Day International (ODI) debut versus USA in December 2019 and led the UAE’s Under-19 spin unit in South Africa during the World Cup last year.
Last September, IPL’s famed franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore recruited him for their development squad, squaring off versus the likes of Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers in the nets during the 13th edition of the IPL, followed by a contract with Team Abu Dhabi in the recently-concluded T10 league, sharing the dressing rooms with cricketing greats Chris Gayle, Chris Morris and Luke Wright.
Hot on the heels of a breakthrough performance in the T10 league and for the UAE, Meiyappan was drafted in the hotly-anticipated IPL Auction, scheduled on 18th February. He’s the only cricketer from the UAE to feature in the line-up, including a slew of big names and rising stars like Harbhajan Singh, Sheldon Cottrell, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Hanuma Vihari, Jimmy Neesham and Jaydev Unadkat, to name a few.
It’s worth mentioning UAE’s gradual rise in the IPL. 2017 saw batsman Chirag Suri purchased by Gujurat Lions, but didn’t make an appearance in the tournament. The following year saw former UAE expat KM Asif play for Chennai Super Kings.
