A Low-Mass Black Hole Has Been Discovered By An Abu Dhabi Professor

New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) professor Ingyin Zaw’s study on the galaxy has made a huge discovery, revealing a low-mass massive black hole orbiting in galaxy IC 750.

Thanks to a research funded by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), NYUAD professor Zaw obtained radio observations through a Very Long Baseline Array capable of reaching all the way to galaxy IC 750, which is believed to be 35 million light-years away according to a UCLA astronomer, Professor Seligman.

Zaw’s research revealed multi-wavelength data about the rare low-mass massive black hole containing naturally-emitted light and clumps of water molecules, shaping to an orbiting disk around a compact central mass. Her study is available online too.

Black hole closer than the first black hole discovered in 2019

Unless you’re in the know, 2019 witnessed the first evident discovery of the black hole. A team of scientists collaborated on the Event Horizon Telescope combining imagery from seven observatories across the world to capture the giant horizon situated in galaxy Messier 87, about 53.49 million light-years far from Earth.

Just like the Star Wars’ open crawl, the black hole is quite literally in “a galaxy far, far away.”
