An investigation has been launched on a 19-year-old who set up a fake branch of State Bank of India in Chennai, with the office looking entirely identical that of a typical workplace.

Some people are going at great lengths in a bid to make a buck in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic. Recently, we reported three UAE ministry staff arrested for threatening visa applicants to add their names to a ‘wanted’ list in exchange for more money, a duo arrested for selling drugs illegally in Dubai, and fraudulent repatriation flight offers for expatriates who’ve been laid off.

Much to your surprise, 19-year-old Kamal Babu has been the brainchild of setting up a fake bank branch of the State Bank of India at the beginning of the pandemic and two more people were involved in the fraud, with one running a printing press and another one creating stamps.
What’s more, you’d be surprised to know Kamal’s parents were ex-SBI employees and often used to visit their office, and understand how they worked.
It was business as usual at the fake branch until an SBI customer passed by their office and inquired about it with his branch manager. It turns out, the town only has two official branches and the third one was a hoax.

SBI officials made a visit to the branch and were taken by surprise of the office’s striking similarities with a typical one. The trio have been sentenced to imprisonment and local police clarified no one will lose any money since no transaction was made.
